As we played with different forms of abstraction and shapes in class, it reminded me of the abstract forms that are so often present in the world of fashion. Maison Margiela’s Spring 2020 Couture show, spearheaded by creative director John Galliano, was filled with the manipulation of simple shapes and space, including anything from angular vests to negative space sequins. The show is supposed to reflect on themes of upcycling and reclamation through abstract art, commenting on the effects of fast fashion capitalism on the fashion world.
