Feminism & Abstract Expressionism

In the article published on HyperAllergic, “Sexism and the Canon: Three Female Artists Reflect on ‘Women of Abstract Expressionism’” by Kealey Boyd, three women are interviewed on their artistic background and attitudes toward the art movement. Multiple times the women mentioned Helen Frankenthaler, an artist that we discussed in class, as being an inspiration and motivation for their own work and process. Their interview opens up the conversation on predominant forms of masculinity and femininity in the institution and practice of the fine arts.
