Steve Hicks–Abstract Narrative Dichotomies

I stumbled upon the oil and acrylic work of artist Steve Hicks on the site Two Coats of Paint, and I was immediately struck by the emotion and meaning that seemed to jump out of the paintings’ layers, colors, and lines. He is influenced by stark dichotomies such as “theory vs mess” and invokes verbal language through his abstract painting. His quote, “an artist must be simultaneously willful and open” hit home for me, as I seek to bring out more inward reflection through my work this semester.
