Sharon Hayes: transforming sound to visuals

Sharon Hayes’ work The Nature of the Beast features 5 lithographs of text. I was fascinated by her method of removing one sense and transforming it to another – removing sound from a voice tape and bringing it into visual material. I think this allows the viewer to become more aware of the limits of a medium, and visualizing the sound also helps realize the transient quality of these archives that can be interpreted differently depending on the time of perception in a changing social/political climate.
