I wanted to share the works of artist Hyun Jung Kim, who is a South Korean artist painting with color and collage on Korean paper. In her series titled ‘Coy’, she depicts women in Koran traditional clothing Hanbok, placed in an everyday, ordinary settings where they no longer look elegant and shy but are rather in their most ordinary and even embarrassing moments. The subjects were first drawn nude, then died Korean paper Hanji was collaged on top to create the textures of Hanbok. By making Hanbok look translucent and revealing all their private lives, it makes the viewers feel like they are ‘looking right through them’.
