The Art of Jewelry

At the Museum of Art and Design in New York City, the expected boundaries of art and its relation to the pragmatic nature of clothing are being blurred in one of its most recent exhibitons, 45 Stories in Jewelry: 1947 to Now. In this event, the history of jewelry seen as a form of artistic expression is traced throughout the second half of the twentieth century, highlighting artists who aimed to expand the common conception that jewelry, and fashion more in general, represent a minor form of art. Instead, the pieces exhibited show a clear propensity for nuanced and multifaceted expression of ideas and sentiments, just as a painting or a sculpture would.
