I was immediately intrigued by this artwork shown in the Processing tutorial, and had to look into it.
“strata #3” is by the digital design studio quayola, and is a video that explores a combination of modern computational rendering and classical works of art. In this piece, a ceiling fresco in bordeaux is both destroyed and augmented using custom software. I find the work fascinating not just because it’s very visually stunning, but also because of this quality of both subtracting and adding from the original artwork. The figures and scenery depicted in the original fresco are reduced to a fractured mesh of colored polygons, but at the same time sound, motion, and three-dimensional texture are added to elevate the work into a whole new realm. Simply amazing.
